WordPress SEO in 2026: Core Web Vitals, Indexation and Schema Done Right

Most WordPress sites lose rankings to their own settings
Before you write another blog post, make sure Google can crawl, render and trust your site.
Hosting and Core Web Vitals
Use hosting with a real CDN, enable page + object caching, serve WebP/AVIF, preload the hero image and self-host fonts. Target LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms and CLS under 0.1 on mobile 4G.
Indexation hygiene
- Noindex tag, author and date archives unless they earn traffic
- Disable attachment pages and empty taxonomy pages
- One canonical per URL, self-referencing
- Keep the XML sitemap free of redirects, 404s and noindexed URLs
Use the Search Console Pages report monthly: "Crawled - currently not indexed" at scale usually means thin content or weak internal linking, not a technical bug.
Site architecture
Keep every important page within three clicks of the homepage. Use categories as topical hubs with real intro copy, and add contextual internal links from posts to service pages with descriptive anchors.
Schema
Add `Organization`, `Person`, `BreadcrumbList`, `Article` and `FAQPage` where relevant. Validate the output — invalid JSON-LD silently loses your rich result.
On-page basics that still matter
One H1, descriptive H2/H3 structure, title under 60 characters with the primary keyword, meta description under 155 characters written as an ad, and descriptive image alt text.
Maintenance rhythm
Monthly: check Core Web Vitals, broken links, indexation deltas and the ten pages losing the most clicks. Refresh, consolidate or redirect. Steady maintenance beats a redesign every two years.
